HALF DAY HISTORICAL TOUR OF SALVADOR

HALF DAY HISTORICAL TOUR OF SALVADOR
ShoreTrips says...
Welcome to Salvador, referred to by Brazilians as the "Land of Happiness" because life here is a constant celebration! Discover the many faces of the city during this half day excursion, and get a glimpse of the city's intriguing cultural mix of African and European heritage.
From the ship you will be transferred to Municipal Square, where you can see the Lacerda's Elevator that links the upper and lower city, and has great views of Baía de Todos os Santos (All Saints Bay). From there, begin your walking tour through the Historical Center, arriving at "Terreiro de Jesus Square," to the home to two of Salvador's most important churches.
Facing the Terreiro de Jesus Square is the Baroque Cathedral, formerly the chapel of the largest Jesuit seminary outside of Rome. The plain exterior masks one of the most beautiful churches in the city, as you will see when you enter. The stunning interior includes a paneled ceiling of carved and glided wood which gives the church a light airy feel, contrasting sharply to the overwrought Rococó altar and side chapels.
At the end of the recently renovated square stands the Church of São Francisco. The opulent interior features cedar woodcarvings, covered in gold leaf that took 28 years to complete. Also note the beautiful white and blue tiled walls, and the spectacular painted ceiling.
Next, you are on to the Pelourinho District, one of the oldest areas in town. Stroll through its narrow cobbled streets, lined with old buildings which now house art galleries, jewelry and souvenir shops. Check out the "Largo do Pelourinho," a colonial square and pillory where in past times slaves and prisoners were punished in full view of the approving gentry.
Back in your vehicle, you will pass by the Dique do Tororó, where you can see the "Orixás Sculptures" by the Bahian artist Tati Moreno. Then, you reach the Barra district, home to the "Farol da Barra" (Lighthouse) at the fortress of San Antonio, built to protect the Portuguese colonists from Dutch invadors (stop here for some history, but no disembarkation).
This is one of the most fascinating cities on the planet--a world of beauty, magic, traditions, and warm hospitality. Bounded by the ocean to the east and by the All Saints Bay to the south, Salvador has its own special identity.
