PRIVATE: WEST COAST FULL DAY TOUR
ShoreTrips says...
The island of Tahiti is shaped like a figure 8, consisting of 2 extinct volcanic cones. The larger, northern portion is known as Tahiti Nui. The southeastern, smaller section is known as Tahiti Iti. This tour will take you to both parts of the island to discover Polynesian culture, including opportunities to interact with Tahitians as they go about their daily lives.
With your friendly, local guide in the lead, you'll head south out of town to explore the delightful coast road. With the beauty of the turquoise lagoon and local fishermen selling their catch on one side and rugged volcanic landscapes covered in lush vegetation on the other, there's no question you're in for a wonderful tour.
Discover ancient Polynesian culture with a visit to the Marae of Arahuruhu, a temple or meeting place that was common throughout Polynesia during ancient times. Set against a beautiful backdrop, the only marae in Tahiti been fully restored to help you appreciate the values and lifestyle of the Tahitian people and the ceremonies that took place here. Nearby, the stunning fern Caves of Maraa are a local treasure and the place where French Post-impressionist artist Paul Gauguin swam in the cool fresh waters with the local population during the 3 years he lived in Tahiti.
Continuing on, a volcanic black sand beach is the perfect spot to wander along the shore while capturing photos of the spectacular scenery and the many surfers "catching a wave".
Breathtaking scenery awaits at the Water Gardens of Vaipahi. This tranquil spot invites you to stroll the grounds, allowing you to enjoy the more than 70 varieties of local vegetation as well as a picturesque waterfall flowing into Lake Vaihiria. The natural cold spring at Vaima is a popular swimming spot on weekends and holidays. Sitting next to fields of Taro, this lovely spot illustrates the Polynesian people's fun nature, agricultural skills and their attachment to their land.
It's time for a lunch break at a hidden restaurant on Tahiti Iti with lovely views of the beach right from your table. Afterward, if you wish, you can go for a swim in the cool, refreshing water.
A stop at the Monoi Coconut oil factory will enlighten you to all the ways this fragrant elixir made by steeping the petals of Tahitian gardenias in coconut oil can enhance your health and well-being. It comes highly recommended by Tahitians who have been using it for centuries.
You'll visit one of the prettiest churches on the island as well as the local town hall, built in traditional colonial style. These locations will allow you to encounter the local population as they get on with their daily lives. If the blue-eyed river eels are game, feeding them over the bridge in Paea is a fun and unique activity.
