This area has the greatest concentration of tidewater glaciers in Alaska, including the Columbia Glacier, which is 40 miles long and more than three miles wide at its face, rising 250 feet above the water. Although still huge, it has been in rapid retreat, averaging about a half-mile a year. This has filled Columbia Bay with small icebergs, making it dangerous for tour boats to navigate too far.
