Portland has always been a popular draw to anyone visiting the Pacific Northwest, but it is doubtful that most visitors know why, at least until they get there. Situated in a beautiful spot of land, Portland draws those who love nature, wine, and food. And the city and its surroundings excel in delivering all of those elements to you. This excursion directs you east of the city to the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Following the strong Columbia River, you and your naturalist guide will be on the lookout for some bald eagles accompanied by other wildlife along the way. It will be difficult to direct your eyes to any one location as the scenery fights for your attention. The basalt cliffs and rock formations were formed during a time when the river cut its way violently through the Cascade Mountain Range. Often you can see the snow-covered pinnacles and volcanic peaks that line your range of sight.

Get your camera ready as each twist and turn on the Multnomah Falls River Highway will deliver another unbelievable view. The Historic Columbia George Waterfalls, found in the Columbia Gorge Scenic Area, includes the second tallest perennial waterfall in the U.S., the Multnomah Falls. This area draws hikers and photographers from afar and adventurers from around the world. You will feel the spray of the 620-foot tall Multnomah Falls from the Benson Bridge. Short interpretive nature walks are included at 2 or 3 other waterfalls; perhaps Latourell Falls, Starvation Creek, Wahkeena Falls, or Horsetail Falls.

As you continue east on your adventure, the dense wet forests lessen and strong vegetation, including Ponderosa Pines, Garry Oak, and other tall trees provide the perfect growing conditions for grapes. The town of Hood River is where you will turn your attention to two local wineries, each different but both very special. These are among the many boutique wines that are found only in Oregon. You no doubt have been drinking these Oregon wines without realizing the incredible area from which they originate, but now you will find a connection between your tastings at home and the varietals you will enjoy now.

Whichever guide you have on this journey, you will see their passion for both the natural setting and the products that come from the area. The choice in wineries will depend on the day of the week and availability, but will include the best, such as Cathedral Ridge, The Pines 1852, and Wy'East Vineyards. Between stops, you will hear about living in this area and what draws people here. After many tastings accompanied by charcuterie and cheese, we will bring you back to the sights and sounds of the city.
