ShoreTrips says...

During this tour, we will learn about the often overlooked history of the Kanchanaburi region during World War II.

We begin our day by driving to the Kanchanaburi Province that sits about 3 hours driving northwest of Bangkok. We will first visit the world-famous River Kwai Bridge. This bridge was built during World War II and was part of the Death Railway. This railway ran from Ban Pong, Thailand to Thanbyuzayat, Burma and was meant to transport cargo daily to India. The railway was built using POWs and Asian slave laborers. Towards the end of the war, the bridge was destroyed in Allied bombing raids but was later rebuilt by the Japanese as war part of their war reparations.

After visiting the historic bridge, we will continue onto the Don Rak War Cemetery. This cemetery is where the 6,982 Allied POWs who perished due to poor working conditions during the construction of the railway, are laid to rest.

From there, we will stop at the Thailand-Burma Railway Center Museum featuring photographic and physical memorabilia dating from the Second World War.

After visiting the museum, we will take a relaxing one hour train ride on the historic railway while taking in the views of the lush jungle scenery.

Before departing Kanchanaburi, we will have lunch at a riverside restaurant.
