ShoreTrips says...

We'll save you the struggle and just let you refer to Kota Kinabalu as KK, everyone else does. This ever-growing location wasn't dubbed a "city" until 2000 and is quickly climbing the charts as one of the largest metropolitan areas in East Malaysia. Surrounded by Mount Kinabalu and the South China Sea, KK provides the perfect combination of industrial growth and natural beauty, a sign of the times in this ever-changing country.

Following your pickup at the pier, your walking tour begins at the Atkinson Clock Tower. This oldest standing structure in KK impressively survived World War II and was built in memory of the first District Officer during British control of Borneo. The wooden tower is built without nails and still provides the correct time in one of the most defining places in the city.

A walk to the city's highest point, Signal Hill and observation deck, offers panoramic views of the city and beyond, including Tunku Abdul Rahman Park Islands, a group of 5 islands located 2-5 miles off the coast of KK. The gleaming white City Mosque, surrounded by a man-made lagoon, is a beautiful example of Islamic contemporary architecture and a sight to behold.

The Sabah Museum, surrounded by lush gardens, reflects the building style of traditional longhouses and showcases an impressive collection of historical and archeological artifacts.

You'll also see the Sabah Foundation building, a sparkling tower of glass. Supported by high tensile still rods throughout, this 30-story circular building is an architectural and engineering marvel and one of only four such buildings in the world.

From high tech, you'll visit a low-tech local handicraft market, where vendors sell goods from all around the region. From woven baskets to pearls (for which Borneo is well-known), you will quickly enjoy the idea of this being a one-stop-shop for travelers and locals alike.

Please inform your guide at what point during the tour you would like to stop for lunch. You can enjoy an authentic meal at a restaurant handed down from generation to generation.

Following the tour, your guide will arrange your transportation back to the cruise ship pier.
