When painting a picture of Hawkes Bay, think about a little bit of everything--an Art Deco-designed city rivaled only by Miami, farming on a large scale from deer to sheep, wine that is towards the top of every New Zealander's list, beautiful views that have made this country famous. What more do you want?!
As soon as you get into Napier, check out the endless shoreline. Odds are you might just jump off the tour and decide to relax on a nearby bench for the next 4 hours. We wouldn't blame you at all, but you've already paid for a spot on the tour and this is just the tip of Hawkes Bay's iceberg.
Two different lookouts, including Te Mata Peak, provide unbelievable views of both the city of Napier and the surrounding valley. We will get as close to the top as possible.
Within the valley, you will explore the two things that make this region tick: farming and wine. This area is the oldest wine-producing land in New Zealand and the biggest producer of red wines. There are over 70 wineries in the immediate area! With great wine comes great farming, but these aren't your average cornfields back in Iowa. The most unique is deer farming, which originated in New Zealand and currently holds half of the world's farmed deer population--approximately 1.8 million deer!
Although you dock in Napier, they have a sister city by the name of Hastings. Known by some as the "Twin Cities" and "Bay Cities," this formidable connection accounts for New Zealand's fifth largest urban population and you will venture through this city center as well.
Back in Napier, you will explore the National Tobacco Company buildings, which epitomize the city's Art Deco movement. In 1931, Napier was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake and was looking for a quick way to rebuild the city. The Art Deco style erupted because of its fast moving construction and timeless design. This is, undoubtedly, one of the most unique spots in all of New Zealand.
