It's a lovely ride from the cruise pier to the entrance to the city. The entire Old Town is closed to cars, and is divided nearly in half by the famous main street--the "Stradun."
Your day begins with a lovely drive along a gorgeous panoramic road with spectacular views of the Dubrovnik coastline and riviera. Upon arrival at Pile Gate, you'll enter the walled city, also known as Old Town. You'll walk down the city's main pedestrian-only street called the "Stradun." It runs straight across Old Town and its limestone surface has been buffed down to a slippery polish due to the countless feet that have walked on it!
During your walk, you'll see and hear about Onofrio's Large Fountain of 1444 and the small St. Saviour's Church, a simple Renaissance structure that influenced other church design. From the church, you'll take a narrow passageway to the Franciscan Monastery complex with its attached museum.
Throughout the tour, your guide will share stories of what the city was like during the war of 1991-1992, as you will find little that reminds you of that difficult time. The citizenry has worked hard to repair and replace the damage from that time.
After spending time in Dubrovnik, you'll reboard your vehicle and continue your ride through the chain of villages towards picturesque Konavle Valley, where you'll be introduced to the wonderful countryside surrounding Dubrovnik.
Here, the families frequently make their livelihood by farming, and many grow special produce that is prepared according to recipes handed down through the generations.
Stopping at the home of a local family, you'll taste their local brandy and dried figs. This family has lived here for centuries, producing grape brandy, olive oil, and wine in the traditional way.
Stroll through the wine cellars and see the olive press before entering the large dining room where your hosts have graciously laid out local specialties, including grilled meat, local cheese, smoked ham, and homemade bread. Enjoy this meal, which will be accompanied by local wine, as well as traditional Dalmatian music and songs performed by local musicians.
Enjoy the relaxing ride back to Dubrovnik and your cruise ship.
