ShoreTrips says...

A bustling port town dating back to 808 BCE, Hamburg is home to Europe's second largest harbor, Germany's oldest stock exchange and more bridges than any other city in the world, which explains its nickname "Venice of the North". The city boasts a rich Jewish history as well as a flourishing Jewish community today. Let's explore Hamburg!

Our tour begins in the historic Jewish neighborhood, the Grindl Quarter, where kosher shops, bakeries, cafes. butcher shops, the synagogue and Jewish school were once found in abundance and the former home of rabbis, merchants and intellectuals. You'll hear the story surrounding the fall and recent rise of this area from your local guide, who is quite knowledgeable about both Jewish and Hamburg history.

We stop to visit the memorial to the Hamburg Jewish community, located where the Jewish deportations took place. It is estimated that over half of the 24,000 members of the Jewish community were deported and murdered.

You'll find the original sites of the Bornplatz Synagogue and the nearby Talmud Torah School, established more than 200 years ago, to be quite impressive. Today the school is once again operating as a Jewish day school and is open to all children of all faiths.

Our next stop is quite somber and takes us through the darkest time for Hamburg's Jews at the Memorial at Neuengamme Concentration Camp. We'll see the exhibits surrounding the Nazi era and the atrocities which took place at the camp. Post-WWII, the grounds were used as a British internment camp, then a prison before the entire property was turned into a memorial. Your guide will inform you of the events which took place here with knowledge and compassion.

At some point during the day, there will be a stop for lunch at the historic Cafe Leonar. This delightful establishment was the first Kosher restaurant to open after the World War II and doubles as a bookstore with a Jewish salon, hosting hosting lectures and concerts. On the menu you'll find Kosher pastries and Jewish specialties.
