Suomenlinna is a naval fortress located off the coast of Helsinki, constructed during the time that Norway was under Swedish and Russian rule. Walk its cobblestone streets, enjoy its museum and discover the history of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Just a short, pleasant ferry ride, but a world away from the bustling city of Helsinki, brings you to the island fortress of Suomenlinna. The buildings of this 250-year-old UNESCO World Heritage fortress, originally named "Sveaborg", date mainly from the end of 18th century, during Swedish rule and from the 19th century when Finland was under Russian rule. A dry dock built in the 18th century is still operational, used for restoring old wooden sailing boats.

A unique feature of Suomenlinna is that it is also a residential area. Considered a suburb of Helsinki, Suomenlinna is home to 850 people living in the historically renovated ramparts and barracks.

As you stroll the cobblestone streets of Suomenlinna Fortress, your experienced guide will provide the fascinating of Finland's history and of the major role the fortress of Suomenlinna played in the wars against both Sweden and Russia. Helsinki's location is truly on the frontier between East and West. This guided tour includes the entrance to Ehrensvärd museum, when open.

Upon arrival back in Helsinki, you will have time to wander the Helsinki Market Square, offering fresh produce, arts and crafts, and local delicacies. The salmon soup comes highly recommended but cruise passengers might want to avoid bringing moose meat back on board the ship!
