We're not in Paris anymore, Toto. You might even feel like you're not in France anymore. The Alsace region of France reflects the influence of its German and Swiss neighbors, evident in its architecture, language, and (perhaps best of all) its cuisine.
As you leisurely stroll the charming cobblestone streets and narrow alleys of Strasbourg, your experienced, friendly guide will relate interesting aspects of the city's blend of culture, architecture, history, and cuisine. During your walk, keep your ears open for the sounds of the Alsatian language, a delightful mingling of French and German with its own distinctive sound.
During this gustatory celebration, you’ll be introduced to the farmers, vintners, bakers, and cheesemakers, who bring you the unique flavors of the Alsace region. The first tasting is a charcuterie plate, a savory assortment of cured meats that is sure to please. Your next culinary experience is a tarte flambe, known as flammekueche in Alsatian, in reference to the flames over which it is cooked. This delicious dish, a cross between quiche lorraine and pizza, originated when leftover bread dough was spread out and covered with curdled milk, bacon, and onions. Today, a wide variety of toppings are available.
In a country known for its fromage, what better way to acquire in-depth information than from a cheese-making farmer? Delight in sampling a cheeseboard featuring his best products. Moving on, you'll stop at a 14th-century winery-turned-restaurant for a French dessert accompanied by a glass of Alsatian wine (mais oui!).
The warm, sweet aroma of kougelhopf will greet you as you enter a bakery specializing in this yeast-based cake, traditionally baked in a distinctive circular Bundt pan. A steaming cup of coffee or other hot beverage provides the perfect complement to this Central European specialty and a perfect ending to your tour.
