ShoreTrips says...

You will be met by a smiling Italian when you depart your cruise ship.

Arriving to Santa Margherita, you will be amazed by the many small towns lining the coast. From one small town to another, driving through Santa Margherita will amaze you with its beautiful streets and homes which are surrounded by hills filled with olive trees. Driving through these hills will be a treat, and bring you to Ruta, where you can take in the gorgeous views of Genoa’s gulf.

On the west side of Portofino’s peninsula is Camogli, another colorful, picturesque fishing village, which was a bustling seaport filled with tall ships in the Middle Ages. Upon reaching Recco, it is time to find out what this city is famous for, focaccia al formaggio, a delicious bread with melted cheese. With a happy stomach, it is time for another beautiful uphill drive to Pieve Ligure, Sori and Nervi.

Find out why Genoa has earned itself the nickname la Superba once reaching the city, with its famous landmarks from its impressive history. Passing through the city, you will drive along Corso Europa, the city’s longest street where you can see Corso Italia running alongside the sea. When entering the city, get ready to see Christopher Colombus’ house near the city entrance, the Piazza della Vittoria, Piazza De Ferrari, Carlo Felice which is the Opera House, Saint Lawrence’s Cathedral, and Palazzo Ducale. Geona’s ancient historical center, which is the largest in Europe, holds the Gallery Mazzini and then Via Aurea, Via Garibaldi. After a beautiful drive up to Castelletto, see the city from a whole new perspective as you overlook it from above.

Genoa’s long history includes a couple of wonderful palaces, including The Royal Palace and Prince Andrea Doria’s Palace. Both of these palaces hold hundreds of years’ worth of history, and include acrhcitectural details spanning several different time periods, as well as stunning gardens. Close to the palaces, is the Porto Antico (Genoa’s Old Port), which has been transformed into a busy tourist center which is home to Europe’s largest aquarium. Don’t forget to ask your driver to recommend a Genoese Trattoria to get a bite to eat at. Many traditional Genoese dishes can be enjoyed, such as Farinata, Stoccafisso in umido, baccalà, and torta pasqualina.

After a full day of sites and food, hop back in the car for the drive back to Santa Margherita on the motorway.
