ShoreTrips says...

Of all the Hawaiian Islands, none offers more trails or better hiking than Kaua'i. You could spend an entire month on this island hiking everyday, and still not tred on all the trails - and we speak only of the officially maintained trails!

The Mahaulepu Coast gives you a chance to see the geologic history of the island written in lava rock. As you begin a leisurely South Shore walk, your guide can tell you why it is a favorite of many families as not only will you see those lava rock signs but also the cultural history which is preserved in ancient lithified sand dunes. Your walk will center on the coastline, where time has formed cemented sand dunes dating from the last ice age. The wind and salt have clawed and thrashed at these cliffs with impressive results. This 2.5 mile leisurely walk will take you along an area bathed in sun with trade winds refreshing you.

The man who began hiking himself here in the mid-80s was so enchanted with the island that he stayed and created a business that centers around his passion. He estimates he covered at least 111 miles during that time and has since developed expert-led day hikes into spectacular canyons and long coastlines with unique geological and natural environments.

As you travel, you will easily see history unfold before you as well as at your feet. In addition to evidence of the stages of the island's volcanic growth over the past 5 million years, you will view the record of numerous Pleistocene sea level changes that have taken place during the last 350,000 years. This is a perfect chance to turn your teenagers into archeologists as well as hikers, as they are turned on by all they will discover. And it is ok to admit that you, even without kids along, will be impressed with the path that you take with your knowledgeable guide.

Continuing along the coast you will enter a sinkhole where unearthed fossil-filled sediments reveal a 10,000 year-old scenario of Mahaulepu's native plants and animals through fossil pollen, bones, and more. It is so interesting to ssee the impact that man has had on this region over the past 1,000 years, particularly now with the attention to climate issues. At some point, hopefully your attention will move a little higher so you can spot some of the life around you. There are Green Turtles, Spinner Dolphins, Monk Seals and you might even get a glimpse at a Humpback Whale, all from the shoreline.

This is a nice 2.5 coastal nature walk rather than an intense hike and your walk will take about 4 hours as you look and chat and learn the area and its history. Lunch will be located at a perfect beach cove and afterwards you can choose to swim and snorkel in the Kawailoa Bay.
Or, if you prefer, just gaze at the life around you and enjoy.

Your return ride is just 15 minutes and you will end the adventure at either Poipu or Shipwreck Beach.
