ShoreTrips says...

More than a century ago, adventure-seekers hoping to strike it rich during the Gold Rush braved sub-zero temperatures and waist-deep snow along the same routes that your powerful Wrangler will take you today. Ain't creature comforts great?

Before the lightweight cold weather gear of today--in fact, before there were even very many muddy, unpaved roads--more than a century ago, the port of Skagway greeted some 100,000 adventurers. Driven by gold lust, these hardy (some thought fool-hardy) souls braved sub-zero temperatures and waist-deep snow along the same routes that your powerful Wrangler will take you today.

While cruising, keep your eyes open for wildlife. Although wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, your odds of spotting moose, bears, eagles, and other local animals are pretty good.

With a detailed map, you’ll be able to make several stops at various sites into the Yukon. As you traverse the White Pass Trail, a US National Historic Landmark for the Gold Rush, your path parallels that of the narrow-gauge railroad, the White Pass Railway. In 1994, the railway received the International Historic Civil Engineering Landmark Award for its extreme feat of engineering and obstacles overcome to provide a faster, safer way to reach the Klondike. Keep your camera handy for some once-in-a-lifetime shots as the train makes hairpin turns, climbs steep grades and crosses bridges while moving through the valley.

Popular stops include the impressive Pitchfork Falls, the second-largest waterfall in Southeast Alaska; Tormented Valley, with its rocky, moon-like landscape and stunted trees is aptly named; the hand-carved Alaska sign, located at the US-Canadian border with spectacular scenery.

We recommend turning around at Emerald Lake, notable for it's intense green color. Visit the Yukon Suspension Bridge if you wish. Walk this 200 ft long pedestrian cable suspension bridge as you pass 65 feet above the raging rapids of the Tutshi River Canyon.

The Skagway City Overlook provides great views of town and the cruise ships beyond. If time permits, we highly recommend the short 5-10 minute easy hike to admire the ruggedly beautiful Lower Reid Falls.

Or, if you wish, visit the final resting place of some of the heroes and villains of the time at the Gold Rush Cemetery.
